Obeying God vs. Man is Challenging but Can be Rewarding

God is a God of order, and requires that we submit to authorities over us. Sometimes we have to bear it even though we may not agree. He asks us, however, to get to know Him intimately so we have the faith and courage to step out when He calls us to task. We have opportunities to hear God and respond just like the early disciples and apostles did.

“But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance toIsrael and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him” (Acts 5:29-32).

RELEVANCE

Years ago I worked in a sales capacity. I often felt that I was put in a compromising place, being asked to represent something in a way contrary to my values and ethics. A senior executive once asked me, “Why can’t you just do what we tell you to do?” Truth is I answered to a higher Authority. Years later, after experiencing much success, that same executive once told a client that I “made people who hated us love us.”

One Friday afternoon I had a conversation with a former client that didn’t go too well. Lots were at stake. I prayed, and Saturday morning God made it quite clear that I should put together a creative proposal and get on a plane first thing Monday morning to present it. Sounds crazy, but I did. I arrived at their office just in time to be seen. Long story short, when I got back to my office, a $250,000 contract was on my desk. It pays to listen and obey God!

REFLECT AND RELATE

Think of times something inside beckoned you to do something. Did it persist? Did it give you peace? Did it make you smile inside? If so, it was likely the Holy Spirit.

God wants to teach you how to recognize His “still small voice.” Have you ever seen Field of Dreams? God had to inspire that movie. How about August Rush? I recommend them both.
